D.I.V.A.A.S.,
which stands for Developing and Inspiring Virtue in the African
American Sisterhood, is a comprehensive mentoring program that
will help to meet some of the social, spiritual, and academic
needs of African-American girls in the 7th, 8th and 9th grades.
The purpose of D.I.V.A.A.S. is to enhance the lives of African
American girls by offering them a supportive network and a safe
and comfortable outlet for self-expression. Program participants
will be involved in regular workshops addressing issues such as
health and hygiene and test-taking/study skills, as well as
regular Christian character enrichment sessions. In addition to
these events, participants will also be involved in community
service projects to enhance their sense of civic and Christian
duty. Through these events, the young ladies will be in regular
contact with female volunteers from Anderson United Methodist
Church, who will be serving as mentors.
Our primary goals for this
program are to have a positive impact on the lives of African
American girls, allow them the opportunity to form strong and
lasting bonds with positive and spiritual role models, and offer
them the toots they need to excel spiritually, socially, and
academically. In our efforts to achieve these goals we will
strive to instill in the young ladies certain virtues and
strengths of character that will enhance their lives well into
adulthood. These virtues are based on the description of the
woman in Proverbs 31: 10-31 who was a wise, intelligent, and
generous leader and a devoted servant of God. Hopefully, by
cultivating these same qualities in our participants, we will
achieve the ultimate goal of developing the next generation of
virtuous women.
We believe that the girls who
participate in this program will improve academically, become
more focused, goal oriented, and certain about their futures. We
also believe that the participants will feel better about
themselves and the people around them, which will be reflected
in their relationships with parents, teachers, and peers. Most
importantly we believe that the young ladies who participate in
this program will develop a stronger relationship with God and a
better understanding of His purpose for their lives.
We would like to take this
opportunity to invite your daughter to participate in the
D.I.V.A.A.S. Mentorship Ministry, an outreach ministry of
Anderson United Methodist Church. Anderson, which has more than
three thousand members, has been an important part of the
Jackson community for more than ninety years. For decades the
church has been dedicated to providing service through its
outreach ministries, and the D.I.V.A.A.S. Mentorship Ministry is
just another example of Anderson's commitment to service and
community.
If you are interested in your
daughter participating in this program, we encourage you to
request an information packet and complete the permission slip.
If you have any questions about the program, please feel free to
call Anderson United Methodist Church 601-982-3997 or e-mail
Kashelia Harrion at kbjph@hotmail.com. We hope that you will
allow your daughter to participate in the D.I.V.A.A.S.
Mentorship Ministry and become a part of a nurturing program
that will help her grow academically, socially, and spiritually.
Who can find a virtuous woman?
For her price is far above rubies...

What is D.I.V.A.A.S.?
D.I.V.A.A.S. is a comprehensive mentoring program that will
help to meet some of the social, spiritual and academic needs of
African-American girls in the 7th, 8th and 9th grades. The
purpose of D.I.V.A.A.S. is to enhance the lives of African
American girls by offering them a supportive network and a safe

help to provide the tools necessary for social, spiritual, and
academic success by affording participants additional guidance
and support to help them navigate the rough tides of adolescence
and young adulthood.
Program participants will be involved in regular v-ork-hops
addressing issues such as health and hygiene, test-taking/study
skills, as well as regular social events/rap sessions called

events, participants will also be involved in community service
projects designed to enhance their sense of civic and Christian
duty. Through these events, participants will be in regular
contact with the volunteers who will be serving as mentors.
Mentors, however, will not be assigned to participants on a
one-to-one basis. Instead, several women from the Anderson
United Methodist Church congregation will volunteer to work with
program participants. The young ladies will have a chance to
interact with these volunteers at regularly scheduled program
events and begin to form positive, lasting bonds.

grade year. Therefore a girl may be admitted to the program and
